Transmission Input sensor

I am being told that my car may need an input sensor which is located once that valve body is removed on the transmission. However, when the indicator light came on the car wouldn't even run or reverse. The next day it did fine and the shop said it has two codes for internal transmission error. Fast forward drive car to transmission shop (it drove fine) and they say they don't know if the transmission is bad but that the code they got was in the input center and it may need an input sensor (which again is located off the valve body). But this would not have made it not run or go in reverse? It literally was being floored and only going about as fast as I can walk and then wouldn't even reverse, again next day it drove fine-ish. I need help! Because is it the transmission or the sensor? The car BB is like 4,5 and I can't spend $3,000.00 on fixing a transmission. They also said they need to see if there is metal after they pull the drain plug?

Good afternoon,

The input speed sensor will not cause this.

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/automatic-transmission-problems

I would start by changing the fluid and filter. A clogged filter will cause it to fall out of gear.

Well, that is the code that popped up? The code that the transmission guy said came through? I am at a loss here. He did say the input sensor would cause it to not shift properly?

I need the code number that was set.

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/checking-a-service-engine-soon-or-check-engine-light-on-or-flashing

It will be like a P and then 4 numbers.

Okay, I will get it tomorrow and post it. Thank you so much! I am just at a loss because this car has had numerous issues. The ladder being December 2020, and it was the throttle body. Then the light came on, and now this. The regular shop had me take it to a transmission specialist, which you can see how that is progressing thus far.

Roy,

So I called him and he said that they were going to get it on the rack today. He said this:

1. He needs to see if there is metal in the fluid.

If there is, it's a transmission rebuild.

2. If there is no metal he said that the Input sensor on the transmission should be replaced and "we will see if that fixes the issue".

3. When asked about the code he said he forgot but that its starts with a P.

Any advice you have other than possibly find another mechanic?

Also, can you just not tell if a transmission is broken unless you are in the actual parts? As a general rule?

He is guessing. Press him for the code number.

Tell him if he replaces the input speed sensor and it does not work, you will not pay for that repair. It will be on him.

It does sound like you need someone more knowledgeable.

Roy,

He said that they pulled the drain plug no metal, but then they took off the valve body and side cover and took something out (sensor or something) and that they saw not bits of metal but like fine grains of metal and said it likely an internal problem and will need a new transmission. He said we could replace the sensor, but that's not going to do anything.. thoughts?

I am going to the shop physically and will write down exactly what he says. But that is the summary.
