My car overheated due to a cracked hose. Water was added and I drove the car approximately six miles, gearbox fault indicator light came on then the engine shut down. There appears to be fluid (possibly transmission) that has leaked/sprayed under the hood but the plug is in place and the engine can be started. Where can this fluid be coming from and what could be the causes?

Oil is probably being expelled via transmission breather, if the transmission oil over heated it will expand and this is one place it can vent from, with the cooling system problem rectified. correct the transmission oil level and wash down, drive normally and watch for any further sign of oil leaking, start here.

Any recommendations for correcting the transmission oil level? This is a sealed transmission with no dipstick for checking the current level.

checking the level is done on a hoist with specific temperatures read with a scanner. i would recommend a mechanic to do this procedure.
