transmission does not shift

after replacing the battery, the car stopped shifting. I have no check engine lights on only a traction control light. also the transmission shifts in manual mode, but wont in automatic mode.

You need to do a scan for soft codes. These will not set the check engine light as they don't signify an emissions-related problem. Check the connectors to the transmission, transmission controller, and the grounds. Also check the fluid levels and connections at the transmission and the cooler.
