Engine shut off when transmission was shifted into gear and Code P1704

I've read about this on several sites, however, I'm still not sure...
My vehicle was running fine, other than sometimes I had to put it in neutral to start it. Then all at once it shut off as soon as I put it in gear. It will run fine in park and will go in reverse, but that's it. I connected a scan tool as was given a few code: P0705, 0743, C1185, and P1704. I cleared them and only got P1704 after. I've already taken the transmission apart, so I'm unable to get it moved. Is it the transmission control solenoid/pack or could it be something else?

Good evening,

It will tough to diagnose this with the transmission out and apart. All the testing is done with it in the car and hooked up to a scan tool.

1704 is the transmission range sensor. Nothing to do with your issue.

The one thing you will need to replace is the torque converter. That is most likely the reason for stalling. The clutch inside may be locked and causing it to stall. Common failure.

I think I was wrong about the last code in my original question. I believe it was the 0743. This is the part they say it is and is the part I took out.

Okay, this could be the issue but needs to be verified. It could also be the internal wiring harness.

I would still replace the torque converter.

That is the other code for the range sensor. That would effect it starting in neutral.

On the side of the transmission by the shift cable.

I was told this part was replaced a couple years ago. What could make it go out? I hauled some railroad ties about 6 months before it went out and have always wondered if that messed with something.

That was 2 years ago and this is now. It wears out. Replace it since the transmission is out.

I hadn't responded, I fell asleep, my apologies. I was questioning the part due to it costing $300.00 to replace (plus the estimate 8 quarts of transmission fluid). I was hoping for something cheaper. I've been looking on rockauto.com for the part. I just don't think I'm finding the right one.

What part? The solenoid pack or the park/neutral switch?

I attached the solenoid pack. But remember, you still need a torque converter.

I finally have the new solenoid pack. I was going to install it today, then came across another problem. When removing the old one, I took off the value body causing 4 little balls to fall out. I cannot find anything, anywhere, that says where those go. Can you help?

What transmission do you have?

Is it the 4R100, C6 or the E4OD?

The standard id the 4R.

I just double checked and that is the diagram for the valve body for the 4R100.

I may have a different one. Mine is smaller and only has 4 balls. I was told a 5th ball may still be in the transmission. This is the only thing holding me back from getting my truck back on the road and I desperately need it.

That was the only diagram for the transmission in our information system.

I would go on line and go ATSG. That is a company that makes manuals for all transmissions and has great break downs for everything. They also have a tech line for you to call with any questions.

So, I've replaced everything and it's still doing the same thing, maybe not as bad. I don't know anything about torque converters, which I think is next step. However, I don't want to cave and take it to a garage, this woman is running out of options.

I would at least take it to a shop and tell them what you have done and get there suggestions. They can do pressure tests to see where the issue is located.
