Lost power steering and will not move in reverse or drive

it seems one of the CV axle broken. to make sure you must lift the vehicle turn the left then the right wheels check if the CV axle hub transmission side is turning. if not you must remove and replace the CV axle. check figure 1.

Hello, thanks for response. I didn't actually lift the vehicle but i did turn the car on in park (no noise). Then I switched it to reverse with foot on brake and as before it didn't move but there was no noise this time. I put it back in park.

I pushed steering wheel all the way to right and left. No noise in park and both tires angle fine.

Then I put it into drive and the loud noise came back. Noise is not regular but more of an irregular out of control sound.

Noise persists until I turn car off and then tires are not locked, but car rolls. If it was a bad CV axle, would sound be more regular or could this still be it?

PS. would a broken axle prevent car from moving entirely?

Yes,If a CV axle breaks completely the car will be rendered non operative at drive and in reverse because the opposing axle will not be able to move the car due to the differential spider gears which will spin internally not delivering the engine's power to the remaining axle,and you can hear irregular noises. broken CV axle will not effect on tires angle, and you will not heard anything when the transmission is at park or neutral, or when braking,because no motion transferred to CV axle.
Best way to lift the car and check.

One interesting note is that if I put it in drive, producing the noise, then when it goes back to park (where it previously had no noise), it then makes a new, higher pitch sound.

Sorry wasn't able to get pictures under car, but nothing looks out of ordinary. Is there a specific thing? The CV axle on the driver side looks fine.

At drive position vehicle is not moving, please check both CV joints if they are turning at drive, when you see one CV joint is turning and other not then you have broken CV joint.
In my opinion noise you heard at park only when shifting back from drive, in normal condition we stop the car then we put the selector in park, but when CV joint broken you cannot stop the rotation of the CV joint to transmission to select park it will make that noise that comes from park lever latch.
If CV joints are good then problem is inside the transmission, as a first step we must check ATF for metal particles inside oil pan.
