Transmission stuck in reverse?

I am asking for my husband's truck, He has a 1996 Ford f150 manual transmission 5 speed and it is stuck in reverse. How can he get it unstuck and working again?

The only reason the truck transmission can get stuck in reverse is some has broken inside the case or the plastic ball at the end of the shifter needs to be replaced, I would remove the shifter and check it, if it is okay the transmission will need to be removed and disabled. It sounds like one of the shift forks has broken. Check out the images (below). If you need instructions on how to remove it, please let me know.
