Transmission additives

Hi,

There are many different products to enhance the shifting of automatic transmissions. However, I don't know of any one specifically for something stuck in the valve body. Products manufacturers such as Lucas, Prolong, Lubeguard, BG, and so on are helpful for certain things, However, I question if they will do what you need.

Can you tell me what is happening? Has the transmission been serviced recently with a new filter and gasket?

Thank you for your input. at hwy speed the car does all it's suppose to do, but sometimes when it come to stop, the transmission does not go to first gear but it stuck on second gear then I have to manually put transmission to L to get it going then to D eventually.

Has the transmission been serviced? I could be a shift solenoid that is hanging up due to dirt. I have the tests for the solenoids if you feel confident testing, but it will require some basic electrical testing. Here are the directions. The attached pics correlate with the directions.

Inspect Solenoid Resistance
- Disconnect the connector from Engine and ECT ECU.
- Measure the resistance between S1, S2, SL and body ground.

Resistance: 11 - 15 ohms

- Apply battery voltage to each terminal.
- Check that an operation noise can be heard from the solenoid.

Check Solenoid Operation
- If there is foreign material in the solenoid valve, there will be no fluid control even with solenoid operation.
- Check No. 1, No. 2 and lock-up solenoid valves.
- Apply 490 kPa (5 kg/cm2, 71 psi) of compressed air, check that the solenoid valves do not leak the air.
- When battery voltage is supplied to the solenoids, check that the solenoid valves open and air flows.

Yes, I did fluid and filter changed every year. I heard that if I increase fluid viscosity it will help eliminate the problem.

The idea of getting a heavier viscosity isn't relevant to ATF. People would use a heavier oil in the engine with hopes of fixing ticks, knocks, low oil pressure and so on. However, not in a transmission. Actually, it will make things worse.

If you look at the picture below, it shows what can be used and what shouldn't.

Let me know if this helps. I still suspect there is a solenoid issue. Did you ever have the chance to check?

Hello Joe, thank you for your reply, I have not done the “operation” yet, I will get to it when I ran out all the alternatives.

Is it still doing the same thing? Have you ever had the computer scanned which may point us in the right directions?

Hi Joe, yes it is still doing the same thing, Since it’s OBD1 I have no way of scanning it.

Hello Joe,
As I gather the OBD1 transmission code, I have code 62 on overdrive light. I did transmission fluid changed with Transtar high viscosity and the result very promising. Thank you for following up and have a good long weekend.

Glad to hear it. The code is for the number 1 shift solenoid. Normally, it reflects an electrical issue, but if things are working properly, lets keep our fingers crossed. Let me know if anything changes.
