Good morning,

This sounds like it is slipping. In most cases, this happens when the clutches are worn out and cannot lock up and continue to pull the Truck.

How long since you replaced the fluid and filter? A clogged filter could cause this issue but I doubt it.

You most likely will need to either have it overhauled or replaced.

What if the shifter solenoids goes out? Because it catches 1st and second. It doesn’t catch 3rd.2nd just kicks into the passing gear. i'm thinking that the solenoid went out.Which you can get to from the pan.But I’m not 100% sure.

You have a 3-4 solenoid and a lock up solenoid. If you have lost 3rd and lock up you would have 2 bad solenoids. Not likely.

First thing that will cause this is 1 quart or more low on fluid.
Then plugged filter.
A bad pressure solenoid.
A filthy pan allowing junk into the valve body and hanging up valves.
Could be a worn out pump also. A pressure test wouldn't hurt. You can get a pressure gauge for about $20.00.

This is where I would look first.

If all that checks okay then you've likely lost 3rd gear and need a rebuild.

Hello, I have the same truck I'm working on with the ground issue, I made some new grounds and have come into a new problem, the codes 81,82,83, and 66, 67 have appeared, all having to do with transmission solenoids and the torque converter clutch. The truck has been using 1st and 2nd gear fine but when it comes to third at around 25-30mph no shifting occurs, which means it won't go to 4th either ( I have the automatic 4l60 from 1995) If I have it in drive and it slips between 20 and 30 MPH. I've shifted into second manually and got past 30 MPH to shift back to Drive. The truck is doing 3,000 RPM's at around 50 MPH and there is a transmission fluid leak that just got taken care of with a new line. I got some idea from a video that the EPC solenoid is to blame for this issue. The Haynes manual is also saying the shift linkage might be out of adjustment or sticking. I really need to know if this is mechanical or electrical before getting a whole different used transmission.

For Mitch,

You can use a Chinese finger that is flexible and get grab broken pieces and remove them from the tail shaft.

You can get one at a parts store.
