Hard shifting out of first gear

When the overdrive light comes on by itself in a Ford (or Mercury) vehicle, it is telling you that the transmission computer has detected a problem and set a trouble code. Take it to a transmission shop and have the codes pulled. Come back here with the code numbers and we will be able to make a more educated response as to what is wrong. It could be something really simple.
