Transmission not shifting out of first gear

Driving down the road and my vehicle won't shift out of first gear and the RPM's rev up. What could be the issue?

Is the check engine light on? If it is, do you know the codes? You can go to a parts store and they will read them for free.

No check engine light is on. I will take and have the transmission oil changed. Hopefully that will work. Thanks
