Transmission not shifting properly and the fluid smells burnt?

The drive is great but the transmission sometimes you can start up take off it is shift gears and then shortly after that it'll stop pulling. To fix it you have to shut it off, put it in parts, wait a couple seconds, start back up, put it in gear and it'll drive for another couple of miles. He knows and does the same thing over again. transmission fluid smells like it's being burnt up, it smells burnt like it's been gotten hot. I just purchased the truck. I don't know much about what's going on with it, but I would like to resolve it without having to buy a new transmission.

Hi,

The idea that the fluid smells burnt is a concern. Is the level full? When you check it, is the engine running and in park?

If the fluid appears dirty and burnt, the first thing I would suggest is to remove the pan and check for excessive clutch material or anything metallic. If the fluid has never been changed, the filter may be partially plugged, and the longer you run it, it clogs. Also, there could be a partially plugged cooler as well.

Have you tried servicing it? The more I think of it, you may be better off having the transmission flushed and the coolers as well.

Well, I pulled the pan, and you can definitely see where there is some extreme wear.
Metal shavings covering the magnets. In the bottom of the pan full of sludge I guess you say maybe about an eighth inch 16th deep.

Okay, that is what I suspected. The idea that there is that much, chances are the valve body is contaminated and causing shifting issues.

If the trans doesn't slip, you can try cleaning everything and then replace the filter and refill it. See if that helps, great. If not, then try having the system power flushed. Maybe that will clean things out even more. If even that doesn't help, chances are it needs to come apart. The valve body would be where I would start at that point.

I don't know if I asked, but did you scan the can=bus to see if there are codes stored that could be related to the transmission? If not, consider that.
