High-pitched case grinding noise coming from the transfer case?

The car will drive around fine, shift through all the gears great but intermittently it makes a clunking noise like something disengaging and slipping back in, and it is loud, along with that it also makes a high-pitched grinding noise. We originally thought it was the rear output shaft retaining ring but it’s not. It is also the np219 so full time 4wd and the problem happens in all settings high lock, high, low lock. Thanks

It sounds like the selector fork guides are worn-out and the transferase is not fully engaged. Also, there are vacuum lines that if they leak will cause the same problem. Here are the vacuum line diagrams so you can check that out and I have included the exploded version of the transfer case so you can see what I am talking about which is marked in red. Check out the images (below). Please let us know what happens.

I’ve got the np219 transfer case, so it doesn’t have any vacuum lines, just regular linkage, I’ll check the selector fork. thanks

Sounds good, I have seen the forks wear out before and cause this issue, please upload pictures or videos in your response of any problems so we can see what to help you with.
