tramsnission shift problem

All of a suddon my transmission want shift into any gear the sifter cable moves thru all gears but it will not move into any gear

the cable may have failed, sometimes the inner and outer cable separate and shift with in them selves and the movement is felt as a positive shift on the selector cable bot nothing at the transmission, have this checked out first.
