cv joint on tercel

Hi,

When making sharp right turns in my '93 tercel I noticed a sort of grinding/clunking sound. When I took the car to a mechanic he informed me that I needed a new cv joint and axel, yet I have read when catching this problem in time, this replacement is unneeded. The car has about 40,000 miles, should I seek further opinions?

Depends on the damage to the CV joint ball bearings. Generally, the CV boot cracks or is torn by an impact (rock, curb), the grease leaks out and water, dirt wears out the bearings. If allowed to continue it will damage the bearings and housing. You can replace the boot, but I have found it much simpler to replace the axle with a reman'd unit.
Check the CV joint on the other side (boots) while you're at it.
