Ive just been told by my mechanic my left front Axle Outer Boot must be replaced. I went to my local supply store and they told me it might be easier to replace the whole Axle.

Is this True?

If so what are the steps to replacing the axle (or simply the boot if it is not necessary to replace axle?)

Thanks in advance

Hi there,

Thank you for the donation,

Unless you have access to an on car CV boot fitting kit the shaft will have to be removed anyway, now if the boot has been damaged for any length of time the CV may well be beyond use anyway so a chance over shaft is usually the best way to go. To replace the shaft you will have to be able to undo the end lock nut, this is extremely tight and usually beyond standard hand tools to cope with, if yo do get this undone, you have to drop off the steering tie rod and wheel and lower strut mounts , this will will allow the drive hub to be eased off the drive shaft spline and swung to one side, then the shaft can be removed from the transmission, you will loose all the oil from the transmission when the shaft is removed so have a container under the housing, replacement is the reverse, you will have to to up the transmission and always replace all split pins with new, and you must ensure that the axle drive shaft nut is tensioned up correctly, this is also normally beyond home mechanics to achieve.
