We have the engine torn down and are now putting it back together from a blown head gasket. We replace the timing chain, but when going to take it off it fell off and we had to take off the cover and go into the oil pan. We are trying to put the chain back in place and have the 1st piston in top dead center and following the manual that says to have the crankshaft keyway pointing straight down, but when having the sprocket in place and then engine in top dead center the keyway points straight up. So which one is correct or how do you correct it.

then set the crankshaft to cylinder #1 on tdc. u can so so by putting your finger on the end of it from there take off distributor cap and turn the camshaft to the position they tell you with the keyway down.

from there verify the valves are closed on that cylinder and the ditributor rotor is pointing at the #1 spark plug at the cap. if so its set.
