We're replacing the ignition switch in our Tacoma and are unable to get the switch assembly to slide out from it's housing. I suspect it's the steering locking mechanism that's preventing it's removal. Any advice?

Electrical problem
1995 Toyota Pickup 4 cyl Four Wheel Drive Manual
----------------------------------------------------------------
The ignition switch on my pickup is stuck in the off possition and I cant start the vehicle. I have tried turning the steering wheel to relieve tension on the locking mechanism but that had no positive effect. I suspect that either the steering locking mechanism is worn out or that the key tumbler are broken. I need to know how to remove the tumblers. Any information you have will be helpfull, thanks. chris.

Hi chris.,

To remove the tumblers you need to get the key cylinder out which requires the key to be in the ACC position.

Not going to be easy. Check for a blown fuse, the key might be stuck because the interlock switch is not responding to the key due to lack of power supply.

to remove you turn the key to the on position, then insert a straightened paper clip in the hole on the cylinder and push this disengages the pin and the tumbler should pull striaght out.

my 1994 toyota p/u some times having trouble to start, the ignition key switch seems to be a problem since the key can be removed from any positions. Is it the key switch problem that should be replaced?
Thanks

Sounds like the problem is the ignition key cylinder Obtain audio anti-theft code, if equipped, as outlined in Technician Safety Information . On models with air bag system, disarm airbag system as outlined under Technician Safety Information. Disconnect battery ground cable. Remove steering wheel, if necessary, steering column garnish, if equipped, upper and lower covers, Fig. 12.

Sounds like the tumblers in the lock are jammed up. Try tapping lightly on the end of the key while trying to turn it and see if you can get it to turn on. Don't lock it again if you can. You will have to replace the lock.

Failed to mention that the key is broken off in the ignition! (sort of like going to the doctor and not telling her where it hurts!).

Try turning the steering wheel to one side and key at the same time force it- This don't work you have a problem with the shift interlock system-could be the shift interlock solenoid not engaging.

The fuses in the kick panel on the driver side do not illuminate when I put a test light on them. When I turn the ignition to crank, I get nothing (no sound, no clicks). I get no check engine light, no buzz from when you put the key in the ignition or when I turn the key on. It has a brand new battery and is getting power to the block and 12 volts. I get headlights and horn. I'm wanting to test the ignition wires going to the switch or the switch itself, but not sure what or how to do it. I've really run out of options of what to do and requesting help.

Good afternoon,

Did you check for power with the key on?

I attached a diagram of the fuse panel.

Disconnect the negative battery cable. Unscrew the retaining screws and remove the upper and lower steering column covers. Unscrew the 2 retaining screws and remove the steering column garnish. Turn the ignition key to the ACC position. Push the lock cylinder stop in with a small, round object (cotter pin, punch etc.) and pull out the ignition key and the lock cylinder. You may find that removing the steering wheel and the combination switch will facilitate easier removal. Withdraw the lock cylinder from the lock housing while depressing the lock tab. To remove the ignition switch, unfasten its securing screws and withdraw the switch from the lock housing. To install: Align the locking cam with the hole in the ignition switch and insert the switch into the lock housing. Secure the switch with its screws. Make sure that both the lock cylinder and the column lock are in the ACC position. Slide the cylinder into the lock housing until the stop tab engages the hole in the lock. Install the steering column garnish and the upper and lower column covers. Connect the negative battery cable.
