Smells problem
1994 Toyota Pickup Two Wheel Drive Automatic 6-cylinder

What would cause a gas smell under the hood about an hour after engine turned off. Charcoal canister has been replaced but did not help. Smell is stronger on driver's side under hood.

My problem was a raw gas smell about an hour after the engine was turned off coming from the right side of the engine. At one time I thought it was coming from the left side. It turned out the fuel pulsation valve located on the end of the plenum was leaking. The part was $140 and labor was $190. The intake had to be removed. I hope this helps.

Thanks for the response. My problem is that it takes several crank to start the engine. Once it start a raw gasoline smell it present somewhere under the engine. Once stop it will restart on the first crank even after 15min-30min. Leaving the engine off longer would take several crank again to start it. Did you have this problem? Thanks again.

I did have problems starting ( which has never happened before ) about 3 or 4 times during the 4 weeks I had the gas smell. Usually I had no problem starting. The mechanic who found the problem said the leak would bleed the pressure of the line and it could cause you to have to crank a few times to build the pressure back to start the engine. I'm not sure why I would only have the starting issues a couple of times but since the valve was replaced my truck has started every time. It's been over a week. At first he inspected everything he could see and even did a smoke test where they pump smoke into the system and look for leaks. None where found. When he pulled the intake off he was expecting one the the injectors to be leaking. He wasn't even for sure what the valve was at first, he only new it was leaking gas.

Found the fuel pulsation valve was leaking gas while the engine was running. Thanks. I'll see if I can get one from pick'n'pull. $140, wow. I'm cheap. Thanks again.
