My 4x4 1990 toyota pickup runs good for about 2 miles then the engine light comes on and it loses all speed. It will usually stay running but you can only go 5 or 10 mph, or it will stall right out at a stoplight. If I let it sit for a while it runs good again for about the next 2 miles. I thought this might have been a coil or fuel pump problem, so they have both been replaced and no change. It has the 22RE 2.4L engine. The engine has had a knock for over a year, but it has always run strong. It has an automatic transmission and this is the second engine. I put this engine in about a year and a half ago. When I jump a wire for the code, it reads 52, for knock sensor. The engine knocks so does that mean the knock sensor is working and its time for a new truck or is this a fixable problem? Thank you so much for any help, I'm stuck in Buffalo,New York without a 4x4. We just got a foot of snow yesterday!!

the knock sensor its designed to adjust the engine to prevent the "knocking" thats its the only code you got?

if the computeri show the knock sensor that means that sensor its not working properly and should be replaced.

I unhooked the battery to reset the codes and now the new code is 51, idle or nuetral switch? It was reading a code 52 but it now says 51. I have no idea why it changed but does this mean anything different? thanks again for your help.
