Engine Cooling problem
1987 Toyota Pickup 4 cyl Four Wheel Drive Manual 150K miles

I have found low coolant level in my radiator. Apparently it has gone into the radiator expansion/overflow reservoir.

What is the problem?

Originally I had problems with erratic coolant temps (as displayed on instrument panel). Replaced coolant temp sensor.

Dealer supplied part was not exact, but I installed it.

Temps continued to be questionable: ie. temp reads "normal" upon starting a cold engine.

Temp displayed in red zone on guage after a week or so. Found coolant level low. No leaks found; however unable to pressure test system.

Refilled radiator several times. After 20+ miles of driving, coolant level would be low.

This last cycle coolant in radiator is low and there is NOW an excess of coolant in the overflow/expansion reservoir.

Any suggestions?

Hi there, you will need to have a cooling system pressure test done, and also have the pressure cap checked as it may have a defective return valve.
