Hey, I'm trying to replace the driveshaft on my 94' Toyota Paseo and there are serious rust problems preventing it. I managed to loosen the axle nut with a torch and leverage pole. The problem is with the lock nut that holds the shaft and the ball joint together and also the brake caliper nuts. They will not budge. I've tried a torch, rip tite sockets and a chisel. They are very stripped. Is there anything I can do?

Any helpful advise would be much appreciated.

Hi Jon21947,

This is a situation most dreaded by mechanics.

Since you have used a blow torch to heat it up, get a can of good rust penetrant and let it soak through before trying to unloosen.

Wurth has a rust penetrant that works very well for such situations.

Good luck, you would need plenty iof it. If all fails, you would have to use a sharp chisel to break the nut.

As to the calipers, a knuckle assy from the scrap yard would be the best option.

KHLow2008, thanks for the advise. I actually found a tool that works wonders although what you said would have worked.

Irwin Industrial Tools 394001 5-Piece Bolt-Grip Bolt Extractor Base Set

There a bit pricey but there worth it. It's made from carbon steel and won't lose grip on the bolt as long as you keep a strong hand on it. I would definitely recommend this tool for anyone with a rust problem.

Thanks for the input. Will keep that in mind. However it must be noted that the socket must be up to standard, if not it would give way before the nut moves.
