I just installed a used engine and my original transmission with a new clutch/flywheel set. I got the engine to run fine except for a ticking sound. It only happens under acceleration. It sounds like an exhaust leak on an air cooled VW Beetle. The sound only happens when I press the gas pedal. It goes away while cruising. I can't make the sound happen while in the driveway. I've jacked up the car and put it in gear, but it won't make the sound. I also installed an OBX header with a new FelPro, dual layer, steel gasket.

Hi turtle10, Welcome to 2carpros and TY for the donation

If its not coming from the valvetrain such as the lifters-engine could be pinging/detonating: engine could be overheating, wrong type fuel octane, check and test the EGR valve might not be opening and also if it has a knock sensor that might not be retarding the ignition

I thought it may be pinging. I just filled the tank with 87 octane, so it may be difficult to fix that issue.

The engine isn't overheating. The temp gauge is working properly with a new sensor. The radiator fan is working properly with a new sensor.

There is no knock sensor. The engine has a traditional mechanical distributor setup. I triple checked the ignition timing. I haven't been able to get the idle down to the factory 750rpm. The best I can do is 1,000rpm. I did install new NGK plugs and Autozone wires.

This car has Federal emissions (for 1993) and therefore, no EGR system.

BTW: at idle, the engine is as smooth as it can be. I can hardly hear the engine running at stop lights.

I was wondering if I had a transmission problem.

Use an inductive timing light-Check the ignition timing-jumper Te- to E-1 in the check connector and see if its within specs-

Is the clutch disc, pressure plate and release bearing new? also the pilot bushing

Yes, I used a jumper wire at those pins. My inductive timing light says the timing is at 10 degrees BTDC. But, as I said before, I can't get the idle down to 750rpm (as indicated by my dash tachometer). The idle screw is all the way in. It was like that when I bought the car. As a matter of fact, the idle was set way high. Should I check the throttle stop screw?

The clutch disc, pressure plate and release bearing are new. The clutch seems to be operating normally. This model Paseo doesn't have a pilot bearing. I can't find a reference to on at alldatadiy.com or chiltondiy.com.

Try dropping it from the throttle stop screw -that don't work clean out the idle air control valve and test the throttle position sensor closed and WOT voltages

OK. I'll try that tomorrow.

Thanks for your responses.

I found an exhaust leak at the flange at the front of the catalytic converter. Hopefully when I fix this, the sound will be gone.
