My car has been rumbling while idling, and also while in the lower rpms. Once I get above 2500 rpms, it either quiets down, or stops. It has also affected my performance, as I cannot drive up a hill and accelerate at the same time. I also take way longer to get to the right speed on the freeway. I went to a mechanic and he said it was misfiring. He suggested a major tune up, and I agreed. I don't think this car has ever had a tune up, so I thought it was a great idea. But now I think it was too late. It hasn't stopped, and they said I should drive it around to try to push out excess carbon. IS it excess carbon? And will just driving work? I've already put about 2000 dollars into this car, which is a salvaged vehicle, and I don't know if it's worth it anymore. Should I pay for any work that will make it run better, or just accept a loss and move on?

I realize there are a lot of questions, but I don't fully trust mechanics. I appreciate any help you can give me. Thanks.

1992 Toyota Paseo Engine Misfiring?

Engine misfiring can be caused by worn or fouled spark plugs, a weak spark (weak coil, bad spark plug wire), loss of compression, vacuum leaks, anything that causes an unusually lean fuel mixture (lean misfire), an EGR valve that is stuck open, dirty fuel injectors, low fuel pressure, or even bad fuel.
