Hi,

I have a 1999 toyota tacoma 3.4L v6 4WD SR5 tacoma with 130k miles.
I am experiencing a grinding noise coming from my left wheel that only happens when the manual locking hubs are set to free-wheel. When I lock my hubs the sound goes away. I've had it checked by a mechanic and they can't see anything wrong.

Any ideas what this could be?

Oh, and the grinding noise is rhythmic, meaning that it corresponds with the rotation of the wheel (it is audible in the same spot on each rotation).

Thanks,

John

I'm going to take a stab and say it's the wheel bearings. In the past, cars I've seen with this problem incurred a squeaking or grinding noise in the wheel itself. It would be very easy for a mechanic to miss because you would have to take off the tire/ take the wheel itself apart to actually "see" this problem. Tie rods have similar symptoms, but the problem you describe sounds like its coming from inside the wheel itself.

I was thinking the same thing as "elvira". Check the wheel bearings.
