Our Prius was diagnosed as needing new rear wheel bearings.

We are considering doing this ourselves. Have bearing puller. Do not have a bearing packer. Is this required?

What other parts should be replaced: seals, axle nut?

This has been quoted at $550 per side. Is this reasonable? It seems like a lot when front bearings are $50. (We were not able to find rear bearings on-line.)

im showing 271 a side in parts and 3.4 hours labor to replace both. it comes as a hub and bearing assembly, thats why parts are so expensive so 450 per side would seem reasonable.

I haven't had one here, but I think it is a matter of removing the wheel and drum, disconnecting what I think is the parking brake mechansim and removing the four bolts that run through the backing plate. Dosconnect the sensor harnes of course. It is a sealed bearing/hub unit, so no packing needed. Torqueing it back down is critical to the axle nut, use a torque wrench.

As far as the cost, this is not the same as the front that is pressed into the spindle, This may only be available through the dealer, but I'll look. I did find one here: http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/search/?N=11803+1725+4294967264+9327 And do recommened this brand above any other one on the market. I always try to get timken first.
