Vibration on an 89 cressida

So this problem just started out of nowhere...i mean i didn't touch the car and it just happen...except it was also the day i pulled out the EFI fuse that same day. the fuse is fine and place back in. heres whats goin on. it has good compression and the same compression readings before this occured. i've recently changed the spark plugs already before this. its certainly not the cables although i will be replacing it as soon as autozone can fine me a set that fits my car. secondly i feel that the problem is somewhere in my fourth cylinder. when i pull out the 4th sparkplugg cable nothing changes in the vibration. if i pull out any other cable it shakes even more. also the tip of the sparkplug in the 4th cylinder for some reason has light carbon build up whereas the others do not.

I would guess its the fuel injectors...i've only use fuel injector cleaners several times. does nothing. yet i don't understand how a "clogged" injector would cause my engine to shake. the only other thing i was worried about is whether or not i have the wrong gap for my spark plugs. i think kragens may have gave me a .044 when my car needs a .043. so far i could have checked these things just that i didn't have a guage on me. i'll be checking that anyways not sure if itll help.

If the fuel injectors can cause shaking...how and why? i just trying to decide if i should take the injectors apart and super clean them or replace and what not.

Go with the simple things first


OEM plugs and wires should fix your problem. Make sure its nice and tight

ive replaced the cables with bosch...my car is still shaking. what next?

Why were you checking the compression before it started shaking

Cylinder no.4 is not producing power or injector problem investigate. Engine mounts okay?

When you disconnect a plug wire does it drop atleast 150rpm?

Did you change the rotor and cap

my dad gave me this car before he past away. I don't know what kind of service he had done on this car...i have no way of knowing other than to check them myself. i had the torque converter replaced since the car wasn't running and from there i figured i'd checked everything. thats why i did the compression.

well now im having new troubles...im sure it has to do with the ignition cables still. this is the second set i've purchased and the second time its failed...im looking into going to the dealer...150 for a set =/

the new problem is when i crank after a long rest, its stalling like it wants to just shut off or not enough juice is flowing unless i give it gas. i've checked the battery and alternator both of which are fine. im not a mechanic, i just know a little about cars. but i don't know why thats happening, i know that i can still go 85mph+ (no room left on the highway to test more) once the car is up and running but now it shakes when i reach those speeds(60mph+).

This mystery is really bugging me.

.....When i disconnect the any wire (from the cap), my rpm stays at 650rpm. its just the engine stumbles when i pull any other cable other than no.4.

also...when u say check the to see if cylinder 4 is producing power...how? do u mean check for a spark from the plug. it has to be producing power, theres evidence on the spark plug.

the injector is the last thing i want to check...seems to be the hardest. the computer system on the injector was checked and good. i think i may have to take it apart...thats the only thing i can think of

i did not replace the rotor or cap...that too suprisingly is in good condition.

Listen to the no.4 injector and distinguish it from the rest-any difference while engine running-they should all sound the same as per its clicking.

You can check the injector wiring for pulsing and also the injectors resistances to nail the injector or driver in the computer.

Its been a while, never could solve this problem. it just shakes. it runs fine. 90mph top it goes right now. its just when it shakes. its not a lot of shaking, it feels like a really weak massage for those with that kind of luxury in their cars. but the muffler does give a puff...puffpuffpuffpuffpuff...puff..puffpuffpuffpufufpfup kind of sound. shouldn't the muffler produce a smoother exhaust?

also an unrelated question, what would driving 50miles when the temperature needle goes past the red do to a car. car still ran fine under that condition but what overall harm could that have done? just curious...

Check with the mechanic. Take it to the shop if you haven't.

i was..actually, till i crashed it last week. still had the temperature problem which is what concerns me. its a minor collision...something i need to fix. performance is all i focus on...as far as the exterior condition...thats after. well i was giving up...and after this accident i should really take it down to the dealer like i'd planed...just to make sure everything is swell. but if they end up taking an arm and a leg...ill just take it in my own hands. somehow the shaking, i guess is related in some way to the injectors like a very good mechanic had told me
