2000 Toyota Corolla Fizzing noise from under the hood when

I had recently replaced spark-plugs as adviced by a mechanic. Immediately after that, this problem has started. Whenever I try to accelerate the car (at a green signal etc), there is a fizzing noise, (more like the sound of sparks coming out while welding iron).

I am unsure whether it is because of the brand new spark-plugs, or because of untuned engine? I had also replaced the fuel pressure regulator.

(All this replacement was because I had a code P0171, engine too lean, Bank 1)

I hope I understand what is going on?

Check the plugs and make sure they are tight. Usually on new plugs (which have a crush washer) you should torque them to factory specs. Also make sure you did not crossthread one.

I took it to 2 different mechanics, one from Midas, and other from another garage. Both their bet was on an exhaust leak, and they said that its a "SPUTTERING" noise. Also, this noise comes only when I accelerate..and not when I am driving at a normal speed.

Its like if I want to increase my speed from 20 to 40 ASAP to get along the traffic, I press the accelerator a little bit harder, and the sputtering noise starts.

If I let it accelerate at a slow steady rate, not care about the cars behind me, it doesnt give out any kind of noise.
The second mechanic adviced me to go to Midas again, as they are good at exhaust systems.

Anyone who could advice me better? I don't trust both of them because the old mechanics have disappeared, and these are new guys whom I dont know well.

While it could be an exhaust leak, there is a direct correlation between the fact that immediately after you changed the plugs the noise started.

Again the plugs could be loose of the wires arcing.

I would eliminate that before I looked at the exhaust.
