I just went for an oil change and the serviceman told me that my outer tie rod needs replacement. He demonstrated this by shaking the wheel and there was a little bit of movement when it should be still. He said that once this tie rod is replaced a wheel alignment is also necessary. I would like to know if this is true and how long can I drive with a loose or cracked tie rod without any danger to me?

Yes if the wheel moves and you can see tie rod movement, then the tie rod needs to be replaced.

And you will need an alignment, since the tie rod controls toe.

If tie rod breaks, it can cause severe loss of control, so get it replaced ASAP.

While it is rare a tie rod completely fails, no mechanic will tell you to drive it, for liability reasons.
