1998 Toyota Corolla Steering Wheel Shakes going 55 mph and

After I had new tires installed, I have noticed my steering wheel shaking. After many trips back to the tire dealer, front end alignments, tire balancing etc... it is still happening. My mechanic has looked at the suspension, the rims etc. and says there is 1 slightly bent rim in the back - which I would not feel and the car needs new struts for a whopping $800-900 including labor. Does this sound like it may be the problem and does the price seem reasonable?

Hi there,

If you are feeling the vibration in the steering, and only after the tyres were fitted, i would be having a second opinion on the tyres, one may have a deformity or is slightly out of round or the balance was not done correctly. the price of the struts seams very high, get a second opinion on those first.

Thanks for your reply so quickly. Where are you from - you spelled tires like you are in Europe. Prices may be different for repairs, however, I did receive a whole new set of tires - replacing the other new set and the problem still exists but not as bad.

Hi there,

I am in Australia, i would still have the steering and suspension checked as also the tyres, new tyres can be faulty with pressure bulges, they will have to be inspected on a balance machine, i do feel that your problem is in or around the tyres.
