I recently took my car in for a winter maintenance check and the garage advised me that I should have the transmission fluid flushed and replaced in the car.

I took the car to my regular garage and the mechanic advises me against flushing the transmission fluid and replacing it with new fluid. He says that I will probably have problems with the transmission if I do this. He has mentioned something about metal shavings causing damage.

Who is right? Is there any reason to change the transmission fluid?

Hi there,

It makes good sense to drain and replace transmission oil, there is no risk of ending up with metal in the transmission due to an oil change, if anything harmful foreign bodies bits of clutch residue that can cause a problem with delicate valve bodies, will be removed, get your transmission service every 2 years at least
