We had our 97 Corolla checked by a local mechanic and were told it needed the EGR valve replaced. They quoted $389 to replace the EGR valve for us and I have been told that seems like a bit much for a simple replacement. Is it difficult to replace the EGR valve? Can it be done by a do-it-yourselfer? Is $389 too much for this simple replacement?

Any help here is appreciated.

Cheers,

Andy

Honestly, it does not sound excessive. The part can run between $150-200, plus a gasket.
The bolts that hold it down can be rusted and hard to get out, since they are exposed to high temps.

If you want to do it yourself, look at the Car Repair Manual link in the post, or buy a Haynes manual.
