You have to loosen pivot bolt and the PS mounting bolt at base of PS unit, it can be hard to get to, remove RF tire and stone guard for better view.

Thanks for your help! It's 1.6L, and your uploaded picture is a view of the generator. What I have no clue is the pivot and mounting/lock bolts for the power steering pump. There are about 4 or 5 bolts on the back of the P/S pump, and I don't know which ones to loosen. Any more help highly appreciated!

Tension on the power steering belt is adjusted by means of an idler pulley (some models may use just a lower adjusting bracket setup-similar to alternator adjustment service procedure). Loosen the lock bolt and turn the adjusting bolt on the idler pulley until the desired tension is felt and then tighten the lock bolt.

when I start the car there is a squeel then when I put it into gear it turns into a louder higher pitched chirp. I just changed the alternator beltt and the belt is tight. The squeel stops once the car is warmed up.

Is it feasable to replace a broken power steering belt on my car if I am somewhat mechanically inclined? I have worked on my Ford truck so I am better with American cars. Or should I just head to a service station? Is this a job that can be done in my driveway?

Hi there,

It is possible to replace it in the drive way, you will have to jack it up and remove the wheel, as this will make the access to the pump bolts easier, have a go you should be ok with this.

Move tensioner pulley (arrow in picture) to release tension on belt, then remove belt. Buy a good belt, Dayco, Gates, Goodyear, Toyota. Use brake clean to remove any contamination from pulleys, make sure pulleys are tracking properly.

A tensioner tool is available from most autoparts stores for rental.

Try a socket on a long ratchet.

Great news.

Make sure to inspect pulleys and clean with brake clean. Brake clean dissolves grease, grime, coolant and leaves no residue.

The bolt allows the pump to pivot, but you must loosen the base bolt ( the bolt that holds the pump at the bottom) to allow it to pivot, then replace belt, adjust tension, tighten pivot bolt, then base bolt.

Hi gulf81star, The Auto tensioner has a 19 mm hex head which you can use to release the tension to remove the belt.
