1995 Toyota Corolla 4 cyl Wheel Drive Type unknown Automatic 94200 miles

I recently purchased a 1995 Toyota Corolla about 3 months ago. It only had 89,200 or so miles on it. The car has run like a dream until tonight. Tonight I started the car & a light on the dashboard came on that said "O/D OFF". I don't have an owner's manual for the car so I don't know what this means. I was able to drive it home but I am scared to drive it. I also don't have alot of money to take it to a dealer. Please, please help. I did give a small donation. I don't know what is wrong with the car. Thank you so much.
