I recently had one freez plug replaced. It was dicovered after I noticed anti-freeze coming from the front of the engine compartment. A few weeks after it was replaced I noticed that there was kind of a boiling or girgling sound coming from the engine when I parked after driving home from work. I also just recently starting using the air conditioner. After approx 15 min.s of driving the air became warm, however the comressor seemed to still be on. I took it back to the shop that replaced the freez plug and after diagnosis he said what I was hearing was air escaping from what may be a cracked head or head gasket.

Does this make sense and how much will it typicall cost to replace the head and/or gasket?

Should I use a Toyota specialist?

Hi lsanches,

If you can hear air escaping from the head or gasket, then the engine would have been running very badly.

I would most likely think the bubbling noise is coming from the reserve tank due to overheating and insufficient coolant. Check the radiator coolant level and the radiator cap.

Hi lsanches,

The radiator cap should be checked for worn or torn seals ( 2 pcs, an inner and outer ring) and nothing missing or detached.

A pressure test on the cap would be the best. If the retaining pressure is too low, the reserve tank tends to bubble as if water is boiling when the engine is turned off.
