Air Conditioner not working

Hello, I have a Toyota corolla 1995, the ac is not working. when I turn it on I can see the ac light turning on for seconds, then goes off. A specialist in AC told me was not the compressor nor freon nor fuse. What else could be?. The fan is working good but it does not blow cold air.

Check the air blend door/actuator could be stuck in the heat position and also check AC relay

I infrequently use air conditioning, but last time I tried it was like the Santa Ana winds blowing on me. There is no cold. Is the unit still working, just out of fluid (or whatever makes it run)? Is the old illegal freon and do I have to convert it (have it converted) to the newer, more evironmentally friendly stuff? How much will that cost?

You need to convert over to the R134a system -R12 freon is no longer available -the cost varies with location

AC blowing warm air only and no cool air? Your A/C cooling problem could be caused by any of the following:

Your A/C system may have lost its charge of refrigerant, or the compressor may not be engaging when you turn on the A/C, or the blend air door inside the HVAC unit may be stuck in the HEAT position so no air goes through the A/C evaporator.

Start with the compressor. Does it engage when you turn on the A/C?

If so, the compressor is working and the A/C system probably contains enough refrigerant to make cold air, so the problem is inside the HVAC unit. Replace the motor that controls the blend air door (this is a difficult job and best left to a professional since it involves tearing apart the HVAC unit -- about an 8 to 10 hour job!).

If the compressor does not engage when you turn on the A/C, see if it will run by jumping the compressor clutch wire directly to the battery (use a fused jumper wire). If the compressor works when you jump it, and the A/C blows cold air, the system contains refrigerant and the fault is likely a bad A/C compressor clutch relay or a bad clutch cycling switch or pressure switch.

If the compressor does not engage when you jump it, the problem is a bad compressor clutch.

If the clutch engages but the compressor does not turn (the belt will start to slip and squeal), the compressor is loced up and you need a new compressor.

If the compressor clutch engages and turns the compressor, but the A/C still does not blow cold air, the system is probably low on refrigerant and needs to be recharged. If you Have an A/C gauge set, hook it up and see if the system has any pressure.

If it is out of refrigerant or is low, check for leaks, then have the A/C system vacuum purged to remove air. After the air is out, it can be recharged with the specified amount of refrigerant. It is important to get any air out as this will reduce cooling efficiency and may make the compressor noisy.

I just bought this car and it ran fine for 3 weeks. Now the windows quit working 1st then, ac doesn't work, fan blower quit, the speed odometer and gauges on the dash quit. Also now the wipers have slowed way down. The transmission now has gotten where it isn't shifting right. I know it is electrical just need some help on where to start locating the problem.

You have to realize these things have nothing to do with each other. Is the battery maintaining a full charge? Have you checked to see if there are any bad body grounds? Did you check fuses for the electrical items? Did you check the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) for the speedo issue?

I think there was some connection of A/C with the old distributor's coil -ve terminal. and as i have now not connected anything with new distributors -ve terminal, maybe that's why the A/C is not working. I need you to elaborate it. and how to connect the A/C wire to new HEI Magneto distributor?

this should not effect the operation of the compressor according to the wire diagram.

what is the make of the magneto??

The ignition system has nothing in common with the AC

i have the wiring diagram of A/C of my car, here the A/C amplifier pin # 5 is connected with Ignition Coil's -ve terminal, i am here uploading the snapshot...maybe that's why now the A/C is not working? As the new HEI Magneto Distributor is now connected with A/C amplifier pin #5. Kindly elaborate.

Check the AC fuse -Black wire at AC Amp where does it goes to the old distributor also see below

should i connect the previous coil's -ve terminal to the new HEI Magneto distributor black wire, coz it has only two wires on it, one is of +12V DC, and other is a black wire (maybe also used for tachometer but my car does not have RPM gauge), so maybe this black wire on new magneto HEI distributor is for A/C amplifier pin # 5 ?

this black wire you are pointing is going to igniter, and in my car the igniter was mounted on the coil.

Is the AC fuse okay?

Since I replaced my alternator my aircon have stopped working, it does not receive any power when I switch it on. I want to know how many wires run into the aircon unit and from where and what works with it! I have checked all the fuses and there are no hanging or loose wires anywhere?

So the ac fuse was good?Also have you checked to see if there is any charge in the system with a pressure gauge?

i have not checked the A/C fuse, its in the fuse box in engine compartment ?

Hi, no I have not, how do I do this since the unit doesn't turn on at all, not the unit in the engin compartment nor the display light by the controls. Other wise the normal van and heater works 100%.

Go to the fuse box under the hood and see if the ac fuse is blown remove the fuse and look thru it you can see thru it and see if its blown.To see if there is pressure in the system you need ac gauges.Let me know if the fuse is good.

Hi, the fuse is good, does not look blown and its fine when I tested it.

I have checked the A/C fuse(10A) and A/C Circuit Breaker fuse(30A) in passenger side kick panel, also checked the magnetic clutch relay in engine compartment fuse box. ALL are OK !

Alright now you have to check the pressures in the ac system.

Lets connect the black wire and see what happens-but 1st check for power on the black wire coming from the AC Amp-before hook-up to the ignitor-Your 1st pic-can you buff it up a bit can't read it

Yes, the A/C is now working as i connected the wire to new distributor's -ve terminal (black wire of new distributor. This wire was previously connected to old distributors coil -ve. The Problem is solved, Thanks a lot for your valuable support !!
