All you got is one timing belt in there unless he wants to put another one in there for decoration or whatever. This link will show the timing belt marks and the water pump replacement

https://www.2carpros.com/diagrams/toyota/corolla/1994

Please run down this guide and report back.

You do not HAVE to change the pump, most mechanics will change it as preventative maint.

If you need to change pump 2 months later, you will have to remove timing belt to get to it.

Thanks for the + I appreciate it.

If the pump has over 100K I would probably change it, but it is your money.

I have seen these pumps last 150K or more.

Ok, yesterday I asked about getting the water pump replaced. My question today is if they replace the water pump does it involve dealings with the timing belt? I have a couple different answers on this and I was just wanting to know if they had to bother the timing belt at all to change the pump cause if they did then I was just going to get the timing belt changed as well. Do you know how much it is to get this timing belt changed?

HI there,

Thank you for the donation,

The Corolla 4A-FE & 7A-FE are not cam belt driven water pumps, If your timing belt has been changed as per schedule it will be due again at 300,000 Mls so i would consider having both done at the same time to same some money.

To add to what Mark said:

The belt must be removed to get to the WP, so as long as it is removed and not contaminated with coolant, you are OK.

But as Mark said it will save you money, I would replace belt.

when you buy entire timing kit does this include the o ring(distributer) and is a mechanic suppose to change the o-ring when timing was done?

maybe? there are diferent kits from different suppliers that may contain different amounts of replacement parts so whether an o ring was included you would have to know the supplier of the kit. i take it yours is leaking? if the leak was spotted during the kit installation the mechanic could have asked you if you want it replaced or just have done it anyway as it was deemed needed?

Hi,

I have a 1993 Toyota Corolla Wagon with the 1.8L engine. It has 175,000 miles on it. I bought it at 105,000 miles and don't know if or when the timing belt was last replaced. My mechanic tells me that "AllData" claims it is an interference engine, but the dealership's service department I bought it from and the "Gates" timing belt manual tell me it is a non-interference engine. Please help me solve this conflicting information. Also, if it is a non-interference engine is there any good reason accept possibly convenience to replace the timing belt when the car is running fine.

Thank you in advance.

The timing belt should be replaced every 60-70K. You will hear both sides on the engine as to weather it is an interference engine or not.
Regardless, if the belt breaks you will be stranded and unless the non-interference group gives you a written guarentee, I would replace it.
If the belt broke on the freeway at 3000rpm, it is possible the belt could get jammed in the lower pulley, break it or crack the oil pump housing, also
how much would it cost to have it towed 30 miles?

Here is a guide that will show you all of the timing belt configurations you will need for all engines of that year. Look toward the bottom.

Please let us know what you find.

depends on what motor is in it. the 4AFE is a non-interference design. if it has the 4AGE then it is interference design. both designs have timing belts.

Most shops that change belts will put a sticker on engine, indicating when belt was changed.

The 4AGE engine has two camshaft cogs that the belt turns, the 4AFE has one.

Does that mean that the 4AGE is a dual overhead type cam? If that is the case then I have the 4AFE. Would that be the case in other vehicles? I have a VW Jetta that I believe is a Dual overhead cam. It is an 04. Would that be a chain or a belt?

the 4AGE is a 16 valve configuration with DOHC. the 4AFE is also 16 valve DOHC but is a bit less powerful then it's "brother" 4AGE

the VW will also have a timing belt.

Does the timing belt drive one cam cog or two?

5AF is a Japanese designation for the U.S. 4AFE, the 4AGE was also available for 1991.

Best thing to do is use the car repair manual link in this thread or get a Haynes manual.

The two marks on the inside of the cams are installation marks, the marks on the outside (facing passengers side) are timing marks.
You would use a wrench to rotate the cams to align the timing marks, make sure crank mark is aligned, then install belt.
