Transmission problem
1993 Toyota Corolla Front Wheel Drive Automatic

My corolla has been having trouble starting up lately, presumably because of cold weather. I spent a whole ten minutes trying to get it started and when I finally heard it try to turn over, I pumped the gas a little bit to give it a push. It started, though a little clunkily. However, as I drove, I realized my transmission was acting funnily. When I give it some throttle, the transmission will hesitate, or do nothing, then, when I let up, it will kick into gear and once it's there, it will switch at random, like a bike when the chain jumps a gear. Even worse, when I give it more throttle to go into passing gear, I feel the initial downshift before it kicks into passing, but it stays there, constantly losing speed, just giving more gas and not gaining. Then if I let off, it kicks into gear again and starts acting sporadically. Did the startup have to do with the transmission problem? Do you think there's an electrical problem?

The fact that it is hard to start leads me to believe that it is probably more engine (missing, fuel, ignition) as opposed to a trans problem.

Get fuel pressure tested with mechanical gauge, also check spark.

Is your check engine light on?
