Gear shift stuck in park, unless press override lock button. why? what needs to be corrected?

The shift lock system has failed, there are a number of components that may be faulty.

Remove shifter handle and inspect plastic wedge that allows you to depress shifter, it may be worn out.
Also shift lock solenoid may be faulty.
