Had this Toyaota for about 2 weeks with 117,000 miles. I was told the timing belt was changed at 100,000. Came back from a 5 hour drive. When I stopped for gas I noticed a burbling sound and rough/weak idle. The car stalled. I restarted it and a belt squeaked loud for about 10 seconds. I reparked the car and it stalled again. I started it again and the inside windows got foggy from coolant and there were more burbling sounds and hissing. Then the belt squeaked again while in drive and I heard a snap (broken belt?) and the battery and brake lights came on and the steering was stiff. I drove approximately 4 miles to an auto parts store (4 a.m.). When I pulled in a let it idle the warning lights faded some and the car stalled out - won't restart. Any ideas????

If battery and brake light are on then the alt. belt or alt. also check waterpump belt.

If timing belt broke, car would not run. Remove valve cover and check timing belt.

I think maybe whatever belt broke (Alt?) that it may have killed the battery (it was old) completely. After the car died I was able to get a very slight crank once or twice and then nothing. If the water pump and belt and/or timing belt had to be replaced (and thermostat) doing it yourself - do you know about how much it would cost? Thanks for your help.

Timing belt kit is about $75 and waterpump is around $80.

Timing belt should be changed at 60K.

If alt. belt broke and car was run for any distance, then battery could be completely discharged.

Yea I went back to the car 12 hours later and it fired up. The battery and brake lights were still on. I think I may have broken the alt belt. It's being checked today by a mechanic friend. Does a bad alt belt necessarilt mean a bad alternator?

No, alt. could be fine, replace belt and run a few hours, if battery will not start car, they have it charged.
