Engine Performance problem

Good day
My corolla's rev counter has recently started to first behave erratically and then stopped working all together. The needle will jump when starting the engine but will then fall to the bottom. During driving, it will sometimes jump about erratically.
I would sincerely appreciate it if I could know what causes this problem.
