a couple of weeks ago i was driving on the road when suddenly the check engine light came onin my 1990 toyota corolla le, so I opened up the hood of my car and there was coolant on some of the parts so i took it to the mechnaic and he checked the coolant fan and said that it was broken so i had him change it for me however after he changed it the fan now does not stop running after I start the car. i was wondering if you could help me out to see if anything could be done to fix the problem.

is the engine light still on now?

no the engine light is not on but the fan doesnt stop even when the engine is at the cool point. like for most cars the fan turns on at a certain temprature but after it was fixed it just keeps running no matter how hot or cold it is.

Okay, this is caused either by a faulty cooling fan relay, faulty coolant temperature switch or faulty wiring. Test the cooling fan relay and switch. If both are OK, inspect the wiring of the cooling fan circuit.

the mechanic changed the coolant tempreture sensor and also the switch was not the problem. so that means it must be the wiring then or what and where is the relay?

cooling fan relay is located on the fuse / relay block #2 ( inner left front fenderwell ) . it is a small plastic square that has an inner switch used to cut power on and off to the fan, the relay is controlled by the vehicle's computer.

One way to test the cooling fan motor on these models is to disconnect the cooling fan switch, the fan will run anytime the key is on, and will run all the time.
