88 corolla has rough idle and will stall.Very strong smell with light smoke.I changed plugs, wires, d-cap, rotor, fuel filter, pcv and air cleaner.I have not timed the vehicle but did turn distributer while running to try to improve but nothing really got any better. The only thing that keeps motor from not stalling is to pull the hose that connects to pcv. The motor runs great when hose is not connected and it makes a hissing sound. The plugs I took out had alot of dry sooty black carbon on ends.

Hi there.

Check all the vacuum hoses as these often crack and break, also the inlet gasket often sucks in and leaks, check this next.

I just came back in from garage. After reading an article about purchasing the wrong type of pcv for your vehicle. I decided to pull pcv from cover and then connect hose to see if it kept running. It shut off just like if I put my finger over the hose openimg. Funny thing is it blows air the correct way and does not the other like it shoud. When I get up sat. I will try a different auto parts store and ask how many different valxes there is for different engines and purchase a few and take back the ones that do not work. I also did the propane trick to find a vac leak. The motor did stall a little when the propane was blowing on a certain part of the carb base. Maybe I will try to tighten down carb a little sat.
