I have a Nova that has the A131L 3 speed transmission in it and I would like to change it to a 4 speed trans, Will a different trans fit the 1.6L engine?

This is a difficult question. It depends on the engine (4ALC, 4AGE etc.) and if it was offered in 1987.

Later years (89- up) offered the A420, but in any case you would need new mounts (if the car was offered with the 4 speed), otherwise you would have to fabricate new mount holes in the lower frame.

A factory manual would tell you if the 4 speed was offered.

Also the A131L shifting was controlled by a kick-down cable, while (I believe) tha A420 was controlled by vacuum.

You could also ask a junk yard if the 4 speed was offered.

While anything is possible you may wind spending a lot of money to get the extra gear.
