Leaking sunroof

I have a sunroof that is leaking after I had my car painted this past April. I have taken my car back to the guy that did the paint ( 3 times ) and he has adjusted my sunroof and I am pretty sure I will get no where with him. It did not leak before the paint. I have checked both the drainage tubes and they are not blocked. I am really stuck. Do you think I need to buy a new seat for the sunroof, apparently they cost at least 350.00 before installation. Is there any after market system that I could try to install myself?

Hi Annette,

The sunroof seals are not water tight and the drainage hoses are there to drain any water that gets past the seals.

You mentioned checking the drainage tubes, did you perform any water test?

What I have done is taken a hanger and attempted to see if there was any drainage bockage..they seemed pretty clear. After that I bought a plumbers kit that could reach down farther to see if maybe the blockage was deeper...still nothing. (how far should I be trying to reach to clear this area?). I closed the sunroof and ran water over the sunroof area and it still leaked. I also tried blowing out the drainage tubes with our compression hose, didn't seem to do much. Still have water leaking in for some reason.

Open the sunroof and hose a small amount of water along the drainage channels. If the water does not flow down the drainage channels. they are clogged. The usually point of clogging would be at the end of the channels where there would be a tube with a reed valve at the end. When debris or dust accumulates at the reed valve, they would clog up over time.


They are at all 4 corners of the vehicle, front is at the kick panels and rear would be at the wheel arches.
