fresh gas. new plugs. cap and wires good. all fuses good. new air filter. replaced air temp/airflow(MAF?) sensor unit, and ohms out correctly. exhaust needs repair (a bit loud) hole after cat convrtr.

engine won't start(turns over, won't fire) with air filter box cover installed. will start and idle nicely with cover removed and intake 'snorkle' attached, but slow throttle response with intermittant mis firing. engine codes found were 24 (air temp?) and 31 (air flow). these codes prompted the air temp/flow unit replacement. codes have been cleared by battery neg cable removed for 1 minute.

When you turn the key to run position do you hear the fuel pump? Any leaks between the throttle body and airflow meter.

yes, I can hear the fuel pump when turning the key on. What affect would an air leak between the throttle body and air flow meter cause? When everything is installed (snorkle and air filter box cover) the car won't start, if I just lift the cover an inch, it starts and idles nicely. If I put the cover down, the engine stops immediately (dies).I could not find anything plugging the air box system.
