Transmission Fluid Overfill?

96 Toyota Camry SE, V6 automatic. Just had car in for an oil and filter change at dealership. Car has been off for over 3 hours, checking fluids and found the transmission dipstick wet to the HOT mark. Fluid is not hot to the touch. Cool mark on dipstick is around ¼ inch below hot mark. Is this a sign of major overfill by dealer? Could this harm the transmission or is this nothing to worry about?

Follow up: I’m checking the fluid with the engine off, should the engine be on when checking the transmission fluid?

With the engine off, will the fluid level be as high as the HOT mark on the dipstick?

You should check the auto transmission fluid with the engine running and at operating temperature.

1. Drive the car until hot
2. MOve the shift selector through all positions several times.
3. With the transmission in neutral,and the engine running, remove the transmission dipstick, wipe it and re insert it.
4. Remove it again and check the level. It should be between the hot marks.


Note: if the transmission is too hot eg. after sustained highway use, leave it to cool down for 30 mins before taking the reading.
