I just bought a 1988 Toyota Camry DX. It has a lighted button on the console that says “ETC”, it’s some sort of “power” button, or extra power button. The light goes on when I press it but it doesn’t seem to do anything. Can someone please explain this?

Thank you kindly

G'Day there,

This is a "power" button, It won't shif you into warp speed but you should notice a bit more acceleration when activated. What it is doing, is it alters the shift patten so you can accelerate a bit harder, if it is not working, i would not bother to much about it, as long as the transmission shifts are ok (no flairing) and the oil is clean. dont worry, many drivers dont know about it anyway.

"Alters the shift pattern" ? Do you mean it down shifts ? I actually got it to work yesterday, going up a steep hill. It seemed to down shift, or give an extra hard shot of fuel. (After all, It is fuel injected).
