My girlfriend has a 89 Camry w/ 119,000 miles. Without warning the car suddenly stalled on her at her work. I went to take a look and had a hard time getting it started. It finally started, but only after the starter disengaged. With some rough idling I pressed the accelerator peddle, and it would sputter and die. I noticed a heavy odor of fuel and excesseve smoke coming from the exhaust as I kept trying to get it started. I finally got it to start and idle decently and decided to try and get it home. On the way home, it was obvious that I couldn't press the accelerator too much or it would die. The gas guage was at 1/2 tank and I traveled only 5 miles to home and burned well over 1/4 tank of fuel. I'm sure there are many things to check, and would just like to be guided in the right direction. Thanks.

More than likely a sensor is bad, TPS, coolant temp, MAP/MAF or a clogged convertor. Do you have a check engine light?
Usually when a sensor fails or is out of its defined range the ECM will default to a rich condition.
If the convertor is clogged it is more than likely caused by a sensor failure.
