I have had this loud noise for at least 3 yrs. sounds like my car is popping popcorn when I start it. it is a rattling noise. I had timing belt replaced and is due to replace again at 156,000 miles. currently have 120,000 something miles on my car. the noise starts early in morning or when car has been sitting for a while..it eventually goes away. I had people look at it and until recently no one had any idea what it was . some said Camry's just make noise especially 4 cylinders. dealership says I need to replace the timing belt and water pump. Advise if this is true. For some reason, I do not think it is the timing belt because I already has it replaced at once.
