I own a 1993 Toyota Camry with 160,000 miles. I was told by one mechanic that I need to replace my transmission fluid. However, a second mechanic told me that, since I am NOT certain the transmission fluid has ever been changed (I purchased the car used), I should not change the transmission fluid. His reason: changing the fluid now would stir up extra materials that could hurt the transmission more than the dirty fluid would.

What do you recommend?

Change it. I would drop the pan and replace the filter at the same time. My wife had to have her tranny replaced because we were told it never needed changing when driven under normal condition. It had 160k miles on it. No warning. This is cheap insurance to prevent major expense.
